How to Install Tile

After learning about safety precautions, the following:

1) Know your substrate and identify what type of prep you need

For concrete:
Must be strong and solid, not hollow. Low and high places must be identified and filled with self-level brands we are familiarized with, such as Ardex/Superior, or as simple as grinded down. And finally, a mandatory dust-free area.

For wood:
The plywood must be properly installed, free of excessive uneven areas. You must select your backerboard, which can be WEDI, GoBoard, cement board, or as simple as self-level (mentioned above). Regardless of what type of backerboard or self-level you use, you must have a substrate free of dust. Apply foam to potential loopholes, cover walls, etc. Apply primer prior to installation in case of backerboard, with a technique called directional troweling for a successful and durable installation.

2) Layout

  • Identify the main/crucial areas that will be more visible. In most cases, these areas are referred specifically to the main entrance of a house, hallways, etc.

  • Find the square of your house. In most cases, this is found by taking as reference the exterior walls of the house.

3) Installation

  • Very important to verify the quality of your tile/stone/material before purchasing. We recommend getting your installer/contractor on board before you make these types of decisions. We can recommend you some local reputable places that have provided us good experiences.

  • Place tile material in strategical places easy to grab and avoiding damages on walls, door cases, etc.

  • Ensure a dust-free area. Have water in a bucket and any and all the necessary tools such as trowels, clips, etc.

  • After back buttering the tile and directional troweling on your substrate, place the piece properly and apply pressure and movement for appropriate bonding results. Fit wedges, use pliers, clean up, etc., as applicable.

  • After your tile is set and dry, remove carefully from the joints any kind of material and leave enough room for your grout. Note: Don’t forget to inspect hollow tiles with some hard material such as a broom pole, etc., and consequently replace any defective pieces.

  • For vinyl, floating laminate, glue-down wood installations:
The prep is very similar for concrete and wood substrate. The only difference is for wood substrates, it doesn’t need any kind of backerboard other than repairs/self-leveler for flat surfaces.

  • For nailed wood:
The prep for concrete requires installing a plywood sheet on top of the flat concrete (must be prepared already as mentioned above) and then install the wood. For wood substrates, repairs/self-leveler (mentioned above) must be done before installation for a flat surface.

  • For stone, marble, limestone, or any natural stone kind of flooring:
In a wood substrate, it requires a minimum of 1-1/4" bed for “its own structure” to avoid cracks in the future. For concrete substrates, it can be installed with thinset or with the known technique of “mudset,” which can be used for both substrates with different procedures.

Custom Showers

  • After demolition, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and any other related work as applicable, the framing must be substantially plumb. When we say substantially, it means it must be plumb enough to be able to provide a first-class installation with the proper coverage of thinset, as mentioned above, along with substantial straight walls.

  • Now let’s talk about water filtration in 2025. With the technology developed nowadays, we use certain first-class products known as WEDI, GoBoard, and Superior. These brands have shown their efficiency with past projects we have done.

  • The prep is a very crucial part of a successful project, along with taking any and all the necessary steps such as flood tests, obtaining your mandatory permits, etc.

  • Working with somebody certified in this area is the key. They have been through the workshops/certifications and are familiar with all the materials and procedures involved. Somebody handy is not enough, as this may become complex if you lack the knowledge of a proper “plan of attack.”

  • For more information about the process, videos are coming — and you can click right here! (WEDI, GoBoard, and Superior website)

  • Installing your tile: After you make the decision of what you are installing, you should double ask yourself — do I really know what I am picking up?

An assistant helping you with these decisions will make a significant difference in your order since it would come substantially detailed, showing what goes where. Normally these talented people have the eye and art experience to fuse it with your vision — and that is also part of a successful project.

Now talking about the installation: by knowing your waterproofing backerboard, it will be easier to locate things such as niches, seats, etc., in strategic places in “full piece areas” and places that will look more esthetical if you have total control deciding what goes where.

Permits – What Are They Needed For? Well...

For a renovation/alteration/remodeling, etc., where plumbing, electrical, walls, etc. are being relocated, drawings are needed since they are a reflection of your project and they are intended to be used for:

  • Get firm price bids (subject to changes, etc.)

  • Obtain the necessary permits

  • Work up to code

  • Avoid unnecessary extra costs

  • Avoid unrealistic delays due to lack of planning, which could mean material wrongfully ordered, inspections not made — leaving issues down the road, etc.

  • Problems trying to sell, refinance, etc., your home

  • Claims rejected by your insurance

  • Etc.

The licensed professional who makes these drawings ensures to locate scope of work up to code with clear instructions of how things need to be done — from demo/start to completion. Generally, depending on your type of project, it may have a couple or many inspections.

Bathroom Renovation

  • After an evaluation of your project, we — and sometimes with the assistance of your local building department — will determine if you need permits, which permits, and if you need plans for your project. We will guide you through all the steps.

  • After a permit is issued, and most of the time a Notice of Commencement is recorded in your local county clerk’s office, we start your project. The order in most cases is the following:

Demolition, framing, plumbing (rough), electrical (rough), HVAC (rough), drywall, waterproofing backerboard/substrate prep, tile work, paint 1st coat, cabinetry, doors, trim, paint last coat, hardware, glass doors, plumbing final, electrical final, HVAC final and building final — along with punch list and other added stuff such as windows, etc.

    What requires a permit?
Reaching out to your local building department will not affect you at all. Normally, it is required for structure work, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and building elements such as windows, exterior doors, etc.

Note: Each situation is different, and not always the mentioned above requires a permit. For further assistance, we encourage you to call your local county.

Entire Home Renovation

  • Do you want to bring your home to the 2025 year?
We can absolutely help you. With the help of a reputable designer/architect on board, we will make your life easier.

Depending on the amount of work being performed — since the selection of materials may become intricate — general knowledge may be a good ally to bring your vision to life.

Or let’s say you decide to carry it by yourself. In any of the ways, we will help you…
